Computer and Software Facilities
The laboratory has a sufficient number of modern personal computers.
They are to handle the computational needs of users and
staff of the Lab. Image processing and analysis facilities
are available at several user stations.
In addition there are software packages for data analysis, plotting, image
visualization and general presentation software. Apart from
hosting a number of commercial scientific software packages,
there is also an on-going development of custom software solutions by the
resident staff.
There are two main directions of custom software development:
-
software development in the area of image and data processing, with the
goal of extracting information about the image objects as well
as further processing of these information.
-
software and, partially, hardware
development for the automation of the scientific experiments. This includes
the software for automated data measurements, software for controlling
of scientific instruments
etc.
One machine is connected to a 16 bit scanner for input of
images from negatives. The scanner supports a variety of negative sizes. Its
maximum optical resolution reaches the 3200dpi.
Images can be digitized at 8 or, for wider dynamic range, at 16 bits. The
scanner accepts positive or negative transparencies in color or black/white.
Since all the computers are networked together, data that is input using any particular input device can be made available
on all computers; similarly, data on any computer can be sent to any output device.
Data and images may be:
- stored on various media like CD, DVD, USB Flash, 1.44 Floppy Disk
- printed as laserprinter halftones on A4 paper or on an Epson inkjet printer
- send via Internet, E-mail or transferred to user's own computer using UTP.
